Arthur Ashe said "true heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost." That describes Mark Manning who passed away yesterday. Mark was one of the most significant junior tennis advocates in the last 20 years and the first African American President of USTA Nor Cal. After retiring from the Oakland Fire Department, he devoted his life and resources helping inner city kids in Oakland learn the game of tennis, compete for rankings and most importantly, aspire to go to college. He was well known to many of our players as he awarded a lot of trophies to Burgos Tennis players through the years. RIP Mark Manning.

Lani Tice Captures November 2011
Lani Tice had a terrific run in USTA Tournaments in November and will be shooting up the rankings. Lani started the month by capturing the Gorin Tennis Academy Sonoma Junior Open Girl's 16s division defeating Emily Greco 6-4, 6-2. It was a satisfying win as Lani avenged a loss to the same player in the Fairfield tournament. Later in November, our top seeded Lani reached the Girl's 16s Singles finalst falling to Hillsborough's Alexa Corcoleotes in a hard fought match 7-6, 6-3. Burgos Tennis girls rock!

Liza Brusman & Lani Tice continued their amazing winning season by defeating Monte Vista's Kaitlyn Haithcock and Betsy Main 6-2, 7-6 in the finals. With the win Brusman & Tice became the first ever Tam players to capture an NCS individual championship. In the semis, they defeated the second seeded team of Korich and Hill from Campolindo 6-1, 6-3. Brusman & Tice's superior net play and drop shots set them well apart from the other teams as they captured the title without the loss of a set. Well done Burgos Tennis girls!
